Peace, security, and democracy are the foundations for the development of a country; all areas that are strengthened by the existence of a self-sustaining critical mass of literate and productive citizens. However, more than two decades of conflict in Afghanistan have created generations of people who have lost out on educational opportunity.
Launched by the UNESCO Director-General in October 2005, the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment(LIFE) is a strategic framework for collaborative action aimed at enhance and harmonizing literacy efforts globally. LIFE targets the 35 countries that have a literacy rate of less than 50% or countries where the adult population without literacy skills exceeds 10 million.
